Bombas, burros y Kankuran. Pumps, donkeys and Kankuran.

buenas noticias!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAd8x1EszRg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVydHmgljkk

aioooo

good news!

A lot has happened since the last time I wrote ... although here things go lot slower than i would like... but this is Africa!

the pump has been running for more than two weeks correctly, in fact, a relative of the family where the pump is installed, wants one! a sign that the family is delighted with it ...
apart from this, and keeping with the theme of the pump, using the concept of freewheel clutch (unidirectional) that members of Twente University  developed  ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhyIM7kU5lU ) very simple but effective, I built an amendment to this pump. And it works! Now the crank does not turn back when the users loose it ... which is appreciated ... Sounds easy, but building it has been quite a feat, because the conditions in the garages are pretty crap to be honest. The workshop of my daddy has more tools than all workshops fron  Bafata all together .... (The 2 videos I uploaded: in which I'm turning the crank did not have the brake, and in which the girl turns we see that has the brake).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAd8x1EszRg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVydHmgljkk

Some people started to call me to see the pump, and people seem very happy with what they see. Next week, people from different NGOs will come to make a presentation of the pump. A responsible of WTF came with Marty Barrios, and it seems that he was satisfied, and so interested. We'll see. Thanks Marty!

on the subject of donkeys, as Gambasse people, the village where I sleep and habit, does not seem too thrilled with the idea, or rather does not do anything for the project to proceed, I decided to talk with 2 other villages nearby, which are much more organized, and have been very proactive with the theme. Even so, I will assign a Gambasse kid to learn too, and will lend a donkey and a plow, to show the tabanca that it is possible and profiteable, and that is going to make life easier.  I will go to Kolda the day after tomorrow I will buy the plows, and teach the mechanic about the freewheel clutch I learned. He's going to freak out, especially since many people do not like this type of pump for the subject of the crank!

The day before yesterday I made mango jam. You can not imagine how many mango are rotting on the ground! and do nothing with it! jam or pickle, but something to preserve it! some families dries it in the sun, but not much compared to what rots in the ground. So, I encouraged Tulay, who prepares me dinner every day and a very hardworking woman, to prepare it with my help, and it was good!!! so I brought them to Bafata to sell, we'll see how it's all about. The worst of it is that three youngsters from Gambasse were last year to make transformation and conservation training on mango and cashew. And it was not completely useless, as not implemented. When I suggested making jam, they said they could not!, that they had no tools to produce it! do not fuck! I wonder if they have a pan, they answered yes, of course. And mangoes? too. And sugar? yes. That's it! but what we don't have is mayonnaise jars .... (the only glass jars with lid on the country), so I bought
them. 50xfo each boat. 13 boats 1 euro. Thing they can afford easily. (I wrote this four days ago.'ve Already sold 3 jars at 1000cfa each. Juas!!) !
This story again shows that low education you these people received stops them from developing,  even if small, basic and very simple it may seem to us.

The rain is here! I am a little scared with mosquitoes... Yesterday, oddly enough, I've got to know Bafata colonial quarter (I think I have slow down a little tthe working hours ...), and although in ruins, except public buildings that are not but almost, is a Very nice site! which reminds me of Cuba. This by the river Geba, and this morning I went swimming for the first time, and will not be the last!! it is cool to get up, take the bike 2 minutes and  go swimming!! (This also wrote four days ago. I already went 4 times....)

Saturday was my birthday. And I did not celebrated it.  I had a meeting about the donkeys, I saw a broken pump, oversaw the work of cementing dump piles ... and when I went home to take a drink of water at about 17h, read a sms from my sister congratulating me. Shit!!!! it's my birthday! ... what a iiseless man i am .... at least i ate a little bit of jamon iberico my family sent me. Indescribable.

This weekend was the party of Kankuran in Gambasse. (info of Kankuran http://mandinkatalinwo.blogspot.com/search?q=kankuran ) Every woman is not permited to see it from a close distance, and as soon as they hear the  sound of the two machetes he hits one against each other, terrified run towards home (I have seen their panic face!!!) and they close the door without hesitation. On Saturday, kankuran appeared in the tabanca to warn the people that they had to go to clean the fountain the next day. And so, the Mandingo are very devout of Kankuran! and Sunday, the youth danced a lot (myself included, of course ...) so the women did. It's quite a spectacle to see these people dancing.

well... this is it!!

hugs to everyone!

Contraatacando en Guinea Bissau - Striking back in Guinee Bissau

Photo 5

Striking back in Guinea Bissau:

I returned from Kolda 2 weeks ago , with the pump in the bag. And just the day after I arrived, Lassana Cassama a native
agricultural engineer and collaborator of AFAG (association of sons and friends of Gambasse) warmly asked me to help them writing the projects I was working in, to request funding from FAO and UEMOA (Union économique et monétaire ouest-africaine). Basically was not helping, but fully calculating and writing them! and he said I had to deliver them in 5 days! Reluctantly, I went to Bissau with no hope of receiving a penny from those organisations, but to help this people, and knowing that if they will receive any funding, it´ll be when the projects are already started up (I hope!). I did the calculations, budgets, project drafts, and went back to Gambasse on Sunday, after Marty and I spent too long time in community meetings, meetings with heads of UN in Guinee Bissau, UNDP, other ministries and people who, from my point of view, mostly, don´t do much (fuck all in other words)...

Here in  Gambasse, concerning the projects that I´m involved in (and for those who asked for help) I must say that the pump built in Kolda, is about to be installed at home of a family to demonstrate its operation to NGOs , small agricultural producers, small businesses, families, or anyone who is interested in buying a manual pump an order of magnitude cheaper than the rest of the pumps of the market, and locally made . So there we are. Although, it has not been easy, nor seeking the well suited for demonstrations or materials (in Senegal you can find almost everything, but in Guinea Bissau, they´re fucked ...)

After much of thinking upon the subject, I reached to the conclusion that it is unrealistic to create a cooperative with people that barely read and write (in the best case), at least with my resources as sociologist. The same conclusion reached people from SILO, and with wider knowleadge upon the country,  but they didn´t want to say anything, until I made the comment, to avoid conditioning my thinking upon the subject, which I am grateful of. So, we´ll try to create a company that in 6 months or 1 year, it´ll become a cooperative, after providing gradually training on cooperativism. Let's see how it goes....

and the topic of the oxen: after talking with an agronomist engineer, I proposed changing the oxen for donkeys: cheaper, more versatile and more resistant to diseases. Well, so after suggesting it in the village, they said NO WAY!! and said they had never seen a donkey pulling a plow (Neither do i really, but the professional himself, he does). So I had to call the engineer to convince them. And, thankfully, he did it. Unfortunately, they told that will speak and organize a meeting to start discussing the details, and that I´ll be invited to that meeting instead of me being the organizer. Well I've been waiting over a week to be told: tubabo! talaung baraka sinin koronto suto falo proieto manteña. (Tomorrow at 9, meeting for the donkeys, or something like that in mandinga!) From what I've heard, I think they´ll wait for the rainy season, to say: we want the donkeys tomorrow! lol I'm not kidding ... The lack of education, and I mean the illiteracy rate (36% I think, and in the countriside muchm much higher), prevents these people trying to work to qualify for a better life. It is difficult for a baker, to track what seller owes him money if he can not write their names ... it's hard to understand the concept of diversification to a family: do not plant more cashew, because as cashew prices fall, they won´t have money to buy rice; the subject of donkeys and so many other examples. But the most serious is that they have low self-esteem, are not able to change things for themselves ... (That reminds me of certain attitudes back home, although the standard of living is higher) is very sad to see them with that attitude of fallen arms.

good, and although the end of this latest edition sounds pessimistic, it is not because we start later this week, Inshala! (God willing in Arabic, you hear it a lot!), We will be doing demonstrations to potential customers!

a few random comments about the photos:

This is the first project we started working on: the realization of separate pits for use as a landfill. However, it was not easy: both convincing young to dig (the presence of laura was great motivation for them ....), and convincing each family to pay a little bit to buy a crintin (localy made fence) was not achieved, due to arguments between families.

Alebo and I dig this one just for batteries disposal. Approximately 1 meter deep there are so many of them!! I already told how i got succesful in this matter....

Photo 1

this is the river in Kolda, Senegal. Here, just some years ago children bathed, fished, ... This is one of many places in which your heart shrinks. And among so much shit, a beautiful water lilies ... you see.

Photo 2

this is a community garden, where women collect water from the well with a rope and a bucket. Well depth is 10 meters. You count how many buckets you  might need to water your garden! We went there to install 2 pumps that were paid amongst more than 90 women.

Photo 3

there is Omar and his apprentices! none receives a penny, and they work, huh? that´s how it is in Africa... (occasionally the boss just give them some money ... but again, not offen) They´ll work like that until they´ll open their own shop. This arrangement reminds me to the new working laws in Spain....
Photo 4

The pump: this is the one I built with the help of the above present.

Photo 5

Well, I've been writing this little by little. Come forward to install the pump yesterday, and it works! Right now I do control. Minor modifications are needed, but it works! However, say that I have a torn fibers in the quadriceps (what I think) and my mobility will be reduced a few days, so I will work harder.

hugs to everyone!

PS: THANK YOU ALL FOR THAT YOU HAVE SENT MONEY. I´LL PUT ON THE BLOG THE LIST OF NAMES (JUST WITH INITIALS, NO WORRIES) AND IN WHAT HAS BEEN INVESTED. I'm sorry to report that it´ll be impossible for the donkey seller to provide bills of the purchases.... you can guess why ...

Donaciones: definitivo. Donations: last one.

After the NGO Silo, expressing the willingness of not having the contact with the money will be donated for the projects I am proposing, I think the quickest and cheapest way to do it is through my own bank account, which i can withdraw the money with my own card, and much cheaper than Western Union.

Coop bank account
sort code: 089300
account number: 19189022

eskerrik asko! muchas gracias a tod@s! moltas gracies! thanks to all!

to clarify several things and a little bit more.

Brothers and sisters!!

Due to the fact that i have received several private complains (they weren´t really hard though...), I will try to explain couple of things: Bankia, which it is a conglomerate of several small banks, became famous because has millions of euros in debt. So i am not pleased either, that Silo Gambasse (the NGO) has the bank account there. However, i thinks it is just a inheritance of the past, of having an account in one of the little banks i mentioned above. Therefore, i propose other options: you can transfer it to my account of the coop bank (more ethic than bankia surely!); you can transfer it via Western Union (which is the most commonly used way to make money transfer in Africa i think; or i coul create a bank account in Guinea Bissau for the NGO and there receive the money. I know that any of them are ideal, but what can i do...

I forgot to tell the story of the Conacryan breadmaker: close to where i sleep in Gambasse, Abulay, a guy from Guinea COnacry, bakes bread everynight. He works really hard, actually, harder than the average men here. It is really handy to have the freshly baked bread just in your doorstep! Anyway, one day y went to buy some bread at 6pm and he told me that it was sold out. then i asked why he does not bake more bread (people still buys it at 10pm...), and he answered that he did not have money to buy the flour. So i offered him to lend him some money to produce more bread and to pay me back in 2 weeks or so. he agreed and now he produces 400 breadloads, instead of 300.
he came to me the day before my departure to senegal, and he wanted to give me 6000FCFA instead of the 5000 i lended to him. I became a bank and the meanfullness flooded my mind!! but within a second it was all gone. I returned him the 1000 and i understood how i want to promote or push the development here: not giving for nothing, promoting, helping, pushing up the development instead. That´ll be my policy from now on.

these days in Kolda, I´ve been sleeping chez Pisco (my french is going better!!). He hosted me without knowing me at all, just with the reference of a french guy from couchsurfing. Pisco paints, makes sculptures, designs furniture,... and he does it well! but to give food to his family, he works in a grocery shop, apart from making the people happier in his neighbourhood with his jokes and so! The other french lad, who came by boat-stop (boat hitchhike) from the Canary islands, Pisco and other 8 people, are trying to start up a self suficiency project here in Kolda (agricultural, energetic and financial self suficiency), and I am giving them a hand with some stuff, specially providing design modification of the eurobon pump for the extraction the water from the river instead of from the well. I am sure it will work.

couple of weeks ago, i confirmed a passed experience, which i thought in middle february that it was a perception ilussion, a mirage: when i was cyling towards Kolda, i saw just in front of me a 1m diamenter little tornado crossing the road. I was petrified. I didn´t know that this phenomens exists. So i stopped, i let it go. and i continued wondering if that was common at all. It seems it is around here.

the day before yesterday, speaking with the french lad, it seemed that we agreed in one thing: there is a lack of initiative and self-confidence here, maybe because the inheritance  of the esclavism, colonialism, etc, ... but it is unbelieveable the dependency they have towards the "white" in terms of entrepreneurship and other aspects. Probably the way the NGOs have been operating here it is also a good reason of that. I just seems part of the neocolonialism, making them believe that they are not able to charge and to enhance their live quality just by themselves and that they need external aid to achieve that aim. I may be exagerating a bit, we´ll see what do i think next month.

when i asked the nephews of pisco today why they did not go to school they told me that it was holiday for them. Easter. what!? in a country with 95% of muslims? something is wrong here.... it might be the time to break the chain that hooks them to france... i don´t know...

Several people asked me if i was an artist. It seems that around here, the people that have dreadlocks are either artists or gangs. And if they asked if i was a bandit and I answered yes, i wouldn´t be doing well in my carreer as a white-gang in Africa!

in my way to give up smoking, a slow way i have to say, i haven´t smoked a cigarrete in 2 weeks. however, i am smoking the tobacco leaves in a pipe. it is cheaper, more natural, and the money doesn´t go to philip morris... In the other hand, the youngsters call me old-man cause just the elderly people smokes in pipe. What can i do... I will try to give it up by using a wood stick as they use here as a toothbrush. Inshala!! but won´t be easy!!

the next one it´ll be from Guinea Bissau, the country of the drunken militars... or that was the scotland? ;-)) whatever....

see you!!!

aiooo!!!
